Pink Rubellite Tourmaline Matrix Specimens
The Rubellite crystals from Karibib, Namibia, are captivating non-gem-quality specimens showcasing a vibrant pink hue set within a white Quartz matrix. These crystals are often accompanied by striking purple Vermiculite and Schist. While gem-quality Tourmaline specimens can be prohibitively expensive for many collectors, these Rubellites offer an accessible alternative. Some specimens even display a blue tint in the matrix, which could indicate the presence of Indicolite (Blue Tourmaline), though this would need to be confirmed through testing.
The term "Tourmaline" was first introduced by Richard Kirwan in 1794. Rubellite refers to the pink to red variety of Tourmaline, characterized by its high lithium content and minimal iron and magnesium. The nomenclature for this mineral group was updated in 2011 to reflect new classifications and findings.
